Lead by American Idol, of course Fox won the adults 18-49 ratings race on Tuesday, as a repeat of Glee scored a surprising 3.0 adults 18-49 rating. NBC’s Parenthood slipped 16% to a 2.6 rating in its second outing. Lost recovered fractionally (+2%) from last week to a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating. Melrose Place averaged just a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating (0.6 adults 18-34) in its return from a long layoff. Of course, American Idol steamrolled the competition in its hour, it was down 5% in adults 18-49 ratings vs. last Tuesday’s 2 hour telecast, but equal to its ratings on the comparable night last season. NBC’s Parenthood’s 16% slippage from its premiere isn’t unusual, but it didn’t start that high to begin with. It likely wasn’t helped by a 6% fall in The Biggest Loser ratings to a 3.0 for adults 18-49. As noted, Lost recovered a tick in the adults 18-49 ratings from last week, while the forgotten was down 12% from its last original episode on 2/23 to a 1.5 rating. FOX easily won the night as American Idol dominated with its 8.5/23 with adults 18-49 between 8-10p outpacing the combined competition. CBS’s Wednesday comedy block suffered with The New Adventures of Old Christine down 26% from its last new episode and Gary Unmarried was down 17%. Criminal Minds fared much better, down only 3% from its last original outing. CSI:NY was down 9% as Law & Order: SVU gave it much more of a run for the money than The Jay Leno Show ever did, and NBC rose from the cellar to take third place for the night. ABC had a bad night with The Middle down 28% from its last original outing, and Modern Family down 15%. Cougar Town was down 11%. With a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating, the Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special was 19% lower than Ugly Betty’s last original episode in the time slot. TNT's 'Southland' returns modest The return of Southland got off to a modest start on its new network home, drawing 2.5 million viewers. That's lower than any scripted series debut on TNT, and Southland is a relatively pricey program to produce. Among adults 18-49, Southland pulled 1.3 million viewers. At least it drew more viewers than any previous Southland telecast on TNT (the network has been re-running the first season). You can't compare a performance on TNT and NBC, not really, but needless to say these numbers won't be keeping Peacock executives up at night. The Hollywood Reporter

American Idol won Tuesday’s ratings race easily, and stayed reasonably steady, down 5% in the adults 18-49 rating from the comparable episode last season (2/25/09) to an 8.6 adults 18-49 rating. Two weeks off for Biggest Loser didn’t do it any good, as it fell 11% to a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating. Did that end up hurting the premiere of Parenthood? Perhaps. Needless to say, even though Parenthood won the 10pm ratings battle, with all the Olympic promotion, the fact that it debuted with the same 18-49 ratings as Southland and My Own Worst Enemy last season is not cheery. Lost’s 13% tumble to a 4.0 rating, its lowest of the season, is somewhat of a mystery to me. Were few Lost viewers watching the Olympics last week? Did that many Lost viewers from last week switch over to a new NCIS: LA? (OP Note: or maybe they DVR'd it, yo)After a two week repeat hiatus, CBS’s 9pm+ lineup returned soft. NCIS held up with a 4.1 rating, but NCIS: LA fell 24% to a 3.1 rating. Against something on NBC a little more competitive than Jay Leno, The Good Wife fell 13% to a 2.7 rating. Late Night WarsThe second night of Jay Leno’s Tonight Show won again with a 4.6 household rating/12 share in early household metered markets data from 11:30p-12:30am. Letterman’s The Late Show had a 3.1 rating/ 8 share. ABC’s Nightline had a 3.0 rating/7 share, while Jimmy Kimmel Live trailed with a 1.7 rating/5 share TVbytheNumbersLate Night RatingsWhat did you watch, ONTD?

U2 leads Billboard's 2010 Money Makers list, earning more than $108 million in 2009. Bruce Springsteen is second with $57 million and Madonna follows with $47 million. AC/DC comes in fourth with $43 million and Britney Spears with $38 million to round out the top 5, respectively. Billboard compiles the list from monies earned through tours, CD and digital sales, publishing royalties and more.
U2 $108,601,283Midway through what is destined to be the highest-grossing tour in history, U2 remains the biggest band in the world. Its 360° tour is the group's first under a 12-year multirights deal with Live Nation that includes worldwide touring, merchandising and the band's lucrative U2.com Web site, a digital distribution gold mine for all things U2. The act's current global stadium tour is the most expensive ever mounted -- the daily nut is said to be $750,000 -- but those costs are well offset by the highest capacities ever from the band's 360-degree configuration. By even the most conservative estimates, U2 was far and away the top revenue generator in music last year. With a new studio album, a Walmart-exclusive hits compilation and a relentless touring schedule, Bruce Springsteen was at the top of his revenue-generating game in 2009. Springsteen's profile has never been higher, with added-value exposure from the Super Bowl halftime show, Kennedy Center Honors and even a run-in with Ticketmaster all keeping the Boss in the public eye. Springsteen was also a force at retail and on the digital sales front, with more than 2 million tracks downloaded. And since he writes all his own songs, publishing revenue stays at Camp Bruce. Remarkably, Springsteen Inc. is peaking more than 35 years after his debut album. Like U2, Madonna toured for the first time under a long-term multirights Live Nation deal (hers valued at $120 million), and also like U2 it's a performance-based pact. Madonna delivered: Her Sticky & Sweet tour tacked on a "victory lap" run of international stadium dates that solidified the trek as the highest-grossing tour ever by a solo artist. Madonna's CD sales were well off the pace of her peak hitmaking years, but still more than respectable at physical and digital. Because her songs come from a wide range of writers, the publishing pie is pretty well-sliced. But her branding, licensing and merch efforts are among the most diversified and lucrative in the music business. AC/DC $43,650,466Although the overwhelming majority of AC/DC's 2009 earnings came from touring international arenas and stadiums (it pulled in $41.4 million from concerts and ranked No. 4 on Billboard's 2009 tally of the top 25 highest-grossing tours), the Australian rockers also experienced consistent album sales from their catalog. Indeed, the group's highest-selling album was its 2008 Walmart exclusive, "Black Ice," which shifted 227,000 copies. But coming in at a close second was the classic "Back in Black," with 215,000 copies. In total, the group sold 1.1 million albums in 2009. It seemed unlikely that Britney Spears could ever recover professionally from a series of bizarre events that led up to her 2008 "Circus" CD. But the album bowed atop the Billboard 200 in December of that year, and the pop star's success continued into 2009 with an arena tour that earned her $36.4 million and album sales that totaled 763,000 copies. Digitally, Spears sold 7.5 million downloads; the largest seller was the racy Max Martin-produced single, "3," which moved 1.6 million downloads.

American Idol’s 2010 adults 18-49 ratings duel with the Winter Olympics ended with another Idol win, with the next rematch (presumably) in four more years. Head to head from 8-9pm American Idol topped the Winter Olympics with adults 18-49 with a 6.4 rating to a 4.4 rating. No other Thursday Idols to compare with this season, but on a season to date basis American Idol is down just 7%. Following Idol, Kitchen Nightmares 3.5 adults 18-49 rating was its second highest rating ever. The Winter Olympics 5.8 adults 18-49 rating Thursday night was down 17% from last Thursday’s Olympics telecast and down 28% from the same Thursday of the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics. Survivor: Heroes v. Villains slipped 5% from last week to a 3.7 adults 18-49 rating. ABC’s The Deep End sputtered to a season ending 1.1 adults 18-49 rating. NBC easily dominated the night with coverage of the winter Olympics in Vancouver averaging 25.28 million viewers and a 7.1/19 rating share with adults 18-49. While down significantly from Wednesday night (and Wednesday was the USA team’s best outing ever, in terms of number of medals for the winter Olympics) it still crushed the mostly repeat and burn off competition. Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t a repeat though and after seeing a series low last week with a 4.3 adults 18-49 rating, the Olympics poured salt on the wound and Grey’s saw a new low, dropping to a 3.7 rating with the 18-49 crowd and 0.21 million viewers. It will be interesting to see the DVR numbers for last night’s Grey’s in a few weeks. Private Practice also dropped, to a 2.8 rating with adults 18-49, a low since moving to Thursdays. Survivor was down from its great premiere numbers last week when it averaged a 4.5 rating with adults 18-49 and over 14 million viewers, but still had a better night than Grey’s. In last night’s one hour edition of Survivor at 8pm it scored a 3.9/11 rating/share with adults 18-49 and 11.94 million viewers overall. Even a strong "American Idol" didn't slow down ABC's "Modern Family." Fox's "Idol" grew over last week, but the competing "Family" tied a series high with a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating in their shared 9 p.m. timeslot last night, according to Nielsen overnights. "Family" was second in the slot to "Idol," which more than doubled the ABC show's rating with a 9.5. But "Family" was up 8 percent over last week and tied its premiere week rating. "Family" isn't the only ABC comedy gaining. The 8:30 p.m. sitcom "The Middle" set a series high with a 3.0, the second straight week it has posted a series-best performance and easily winning its (very weak) timeslot. In fact, the only ABC show that was not up week to week was "Family" lead-out "Cougar Town," which also aired opposite "Idol." That slipped 3 percent to a 2.8. "Idol" kept up the ratings momentum from new judge Ellen DeGeneres' debut Tuesday. Though the show was down from a 10.1 Tuesday night, it was up 22 percent from last week and also equaled the rating from the week before. Led by "Idol," Fox was first for the night among 18-49s with a 6.0 average overnight rating and a 15 share. CBS was second at 3.3/9, ABC third at 2.6/7, NBC fourth at 1.6/4, Univision fifth at 1.5/4 and CW sixth at 0.6/1. Source.
