Ryan Gosling may not be vegetarian, but that’s not stopping him from ruffling feathers at McDonald’s over the company’s outdated chicken-slaughter practices.

The Academy Award–nominated actor has just fired off a letter on PETA’s behalf to McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner asking him to adopt a less cruel slaughter method that would eliminate the worst abuses currently faced by chickens who are killed for McNuggets.

Ryan was shocked to find out that McDonald’s still uses a method that causes birds to suffer broken wings and legs and be scalded to death in defeathering tanks.

Check out his letter to McDonald’s CEO:

Dear Mr. Skinner,

I was shocked to learn from my friends at PETA that McDonald’s, a company that claims to be an industry leader in animal welfare, still allows its suppliers to use an outdated chicken slaughter method that results in broken wings and legs and causes birds to be scalded to death in defeathering tanks.

Many of McDonald’s suppliers in Europe already use a much more humane slaughter method that eliminates the worst cruelty. What’s your excuse?

Because no federal laws govern the treatment of chickens during slaughter, the responsibility lies in your company’s hands to create and maintain a high standard of animal welfare. I hope you will agree that the time has come for McDonald’s to truly take action to reduce the suffering of chickens killed for its restaurants. I look forward to hearing your decision. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Ryan Gosling

TAIJI, Japan (AP) - The Japanese fishing village featured in "The Cove," which won an Oscar for best documentary, defended its practice of hunting dolphins Monday as a part of its tradition.

The covertly filmed movie, which mixes stunning underwater shots of gliding dolphins with grisly footage of their slaughter, also claims that dolphin meat is laden with toxic mercury.

Residents of this remote village nestled on the rocky coast of southwestern Japan expressed disgust at the film, which they said distorted the truth, though few acknowledged seeing it in its entirety.

The mayor's office handed out a statement that said Taiji's dolphin hunt is lawful and argued that the movie contained statements that were not based on science. Otherwise, most town officials refused to talk.

"There are different food traditions within Japan and around the world," the statement read. "It is important to respect and understand regional food cultures, which are based on traditions with long histories."

Director Louie Psihoyos said "The Cove" isn't meant to bash Japan but that it is "a love letter to the Japanese people."

"Our hope is the Japanese people will see this film and decide themselves whether animals should be used for meat and for entertainment," Psihoyos said backstage after receiving the Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

The town of Taiji kills about 2,000 dolphins every year for their meat. Some are captured and sold to aquariums.

The Japanese government, which allows about 19,000 dolphins to be killed each year, acknowledges that dolphin meat is contaminated with mercury, but denies it's dangerous unless consumed in huge quantities.

In September, amid an international outcry following the screening of the movie abroad, villagers released several dozen dolphins that had been caught. But locals say they will continue with the hunt.

The movie has not yet been released in Japan, but it will start showing here in June at 20 to 30 theaters nationwide. It was shown at the Tokyo International Film Festival in October, where viewers gave it mixed reviews.

Still, most Japanese don't know about the annual dolphin hunt, and dolphin meat is hardly eaten in Japan.

Takeshi Kato, president of Unplugged in Tokyo, which is distributing the film in Japan, said the faces of dozens of Taiji residents are being blurred out for the Japan version of "The Cove" to ward off possible lawsuits under Japanese law that protects privacy.

"Our purpose is not to attack the people of Taiji," he said.

"If this movie can serve as an opportunity for people to find out, it would be great," he told The Associated Press Monday.

He said he hopes the film will help open the debate in Japan on preserving nature, including dolphins and whales.

"Receiving the top award in the movie industry will work as a big plus for our efforts to show this movie in Japan," he said.

Two Japanese who appear in the film - a local councilman and a scientist based in northern Japan - expressed disappointment in how they were portrayed in the film, and said they were interviewed under false pretenses. Both say they have asked the filmmakers to remove footage of them from the movie.

Psihoyos was unable to get permission to access the cove where the dolphins are killed. Fishermen blocked it with barbed wire and fences. So he and his film team secretly broke into the restricted area - which is in a national park - at night to set up cameras that capture the slaughter.

The movie's star is Ric O'Barry, the dolphin trainer for the 1960s "Flipper" TV show, who over the last decades has been campaigning for the release of dolphins around the world from captivity.

Various numbers in the film such as mercury levels in dolphin meat are also being contested. In the Japanese version, words that show up as subtitles are being added at the end of the movie to tell viewers that research may produce various results.

Japanese government officials also defended the fishermen's right to hunt dolphins and called the film unbalanced.

"There are some countries that eat cows, and there are other countries that eat whales or dolphins," said Yutaka Aoki, fisheries division director at Foreign Ministry.

"A film about slaughtering cows or pigs might also be unwelcome to workers in that industry."

Growing up in rural Florida, CSI actress Jorja Fox was aware of the dark world of dogfighting. But she didn't know all the dirty details until she teamed with the Humane Society of the United States to help with their End Dogfighting campaign. "The more you know, the less you want to know," Fox tells PEOPLEPets.com. "It's terrifying."

Fox is in Chicago to host this weekend's Spotlight Humane: Chicago, an annual benefit to raise funds for End Dogfighting in Chicago. "I'm so excited," she says. "When I heard about this project last spring, I called the Humane Society and said if they wanted help, to call on me. It's a brilliant program." Fox calls it a "triple-win," as the community-based initiative works from a grassroots level to get kids and adults off the dogfighting circuit and into free dog-training classes and other humane educational programs — saving dogs in the process. Launched in 2006, it expanded to Atlanta in 2008.

"Pit bulls are smart and healthy — they can do so much," Fox says. "So the organization works to get kids showing that off, and getting excited about that, instead of falling into the dark side." Fox explains that it's not only pit bulls at risk, either. "Dogs like Malteses and Jack Russell terriers end up getting stolen in communities where kids are dogfighting, used as training material for the pit bulls," she says. "It's awful."

One dog that's safe from the dark world of dogfighting? Fox's rescue boxer pup Ali. "She's 13 years old, so she's elderly," Fox jokes. "If she were a human she'd have a cane and hearing aids!" Adopted by the actress when she was just 10 months old, she's "been with me through everything," Fox says. "It's the oldest comment in the book, but she's my best friend."

Fox hopes that her work with End Dogfighting will result in many more happy human-dog endings, just like hers. "If you're not treating your animal well, you'll never know what a great force they can be in your life," she says. "They're healers, lovers, friends. They make life fun."

Animal lover Morrissey has given his backing to FOUR PAWS’s new animation about rabbit factory farming.
Legendary celebrity and singer Morrissey provided the iconic song ‘Everyday is like Sunday’ as the lead soundtrack. Everyday is like Sunday / everyday is silent and grey /… Etch a postcard: "how I dearly wish I was not here"

Factory farmed caged rabbits have limited space to lie stretched out or sit up on their hind legs. The rabbits are forced to live in cramped and barren conditions. It is not uncommon for bone disorders and foot inflammations to develop, as well as other excruciating conditions. Farmed rabbits may develop neurotic behaviours to relieve the stress caused by their unnatural living conditions.

lol the animation. scarier than watership down.

Johnny Weir staying in Olympic Village because of anti-fur activists

By Chris Chase
American figure skater Johnny Weir will stay in the Olympic Village because he's concerned about "very serious threats" from anti-fur activists.

The medal hopeful had planned to stay in a hotel during the Games, but it would have been too difficult to arrange adequate security. Though there are no indications that any of the verbal and written threats from extremists were credible, Weir's decision to stay in the more secure village was an obvious choice.

He's right to take extra precautions during his time in Vancouver. Though the odds of one of these threats actually coming to pass are low, there's no reason for Weir to open himself up to the possibility. For peace of mind alone, staying in a secured Olympic Village is worth it.
At last month's U.S. Nationals, Weir earned the scorn of anti-fur protesters when he wore a white tuft of fox fur on his shoulder. He was defiant in the face of the criticism at first but later relented.

Weir has long been an enemy of animal-rights groups because of his costumes. It was a disappointment when he finally caved to their pressure. It's his job to look flamboyant. There's no need to listen to a small but vocal group who don't like it. Nothing would ever get accomplished if everyone in the world had to sign off on everything first.

Though those making threats to Weir are but an infinitesimal part of the animal-rights groups, they are a stain on the movement. Maybe PETA and Friends of Animals should spend more energy denouncing those who threaten rather than those who wear.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is on a mission to save Punxsutawney Phil. The animal rights group has suggested the season-predicting groundhog, appointed to determine how long we’ll have to tolerate Ol’ Man Winter each year, should be replaced with a robot, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Wednesday.

Gemma Vaughan, an Animals in Entertainment Specialist with PETA, penned a letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club on Wednesday arguing that keeping Phil on display year-round is a “cruel” way to treat the animal. Blah….Blah…Blah!

“Make the compassionate decision to use an animatronic Phil and retire the live groundhogs who are used for Groundhog Day activities to a sanctuary,” Vaughan wrote in the plea. “Tradition is no excuse for cruelty.”

Bill Deeley, president of the Club, has called the request “crazy.”

“Phil is probably treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania,” Deeley said. “He’s got air conditioning in the summer, his pen is heated in winter … He has everything but a TV in there. What more do you want?”

"Exorcist" star Linda Blair is smack in the middle of a deadly situation -- after a neighbor gunned down a dog that escaped from Linda's animal shelter and attacked the neighbor's pet pig.

The drama unfolded Sunday afternoon. Cops confirm the dog -- which Linda described as a lab/hound mix -- escaped from her WorldHeart Foundation in Los Angeles and ran over to a nearby ranch.

The ranch owners claim they saw the dog put a "death grip" on their miniature potbellied pig named Gerty.

The ranch owners claim they grabbed a gun and fired some warning shots in an attempt to scare the dog -- but the dog didn't loosen its grip. That's when they decided they had to shoot the dog.

According to the ranch owners, they fired off 5 shots before the dog released the pig from its jaws. The dog ultimately died as a result. Gerty the pig suffered puncture wounds -- but is expected to make a full recovery.

Police investigated the situation -- and decided criminal charges will not be filed against the pig's protectors in connection with the shooting.

We spoke to Linda ... she's preparing to release a statement about the incident.

Apparently I like making posts about pigs lately. Poor pig. Poor dog. :( Although this isn't nearly as bad as that woman who had her face eaten by the chimp or about the dog, Dahlia that was found in Mexico last summer. :

Note: This is a response to Kelis' open letter to PETA, which we wanked about here on ONTD.

Wow, I just read Kelis' open letter to PETA and to be honest, its such BS I don't even know where to start so let's break it down one ignorant sentence at a time. She seems to like the word "rodent"- personally I have no issues with those little critters but if there's a dirty pest here, it's Kelis herself. Now to dissecting this hateful letter...Here it goes...In her letter she writes,

(1) "There is no humane way to kill anything, let me start there. It¹sunfortunate but it¹s part of life."

ACTUALLY, THERE IS. WHEN AN ANIMAL IS SUFFERING AND THERE ARE NO OTHER OPTIONS TO EXTEND THEIR LIVES OR PUT THEM OUT OF THEIR MISERY, ITS CALLED EUTHANASIA. LOOK IT UP. BIG S.A.T. WORD FOR YOU, BUT GIVE IT A SHOT. BELIEVE ME, ANIMALS TRAPPED OR RAISED FOR FUR ARE NOT ALLOWED A PEACEFUL DEATH UNLESS YOU CALL ANAL AND VAGINAL ELECTROCUTION, DROWNING, TRAPPING OR BEING BEATEN TO DEATH AN ACT OF MERCY.

(2) "With that being said, I would eat pterodactyl if you found some and you told me it was meaty and delicious."

I PROMISE YOU ALL MEAT UNHEALTHY, OH WAIT, YOU SAID IT ONLY HAD TO BE MEATY AND DELICIOUS- GUESS YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT LIVING A LONG LIFE.

(3) "I found out that the founder Ingrid Newkirk is completely batty. I had a feeling but she far exceeded my expectations. I mean certifiably insane! Lol this chicks will is nuts, google it it¹s a riot! Beyond the fact that I think she¹s a diabetic, which means she needs insulin, which is taken from lab pigs (I know this because my sister happens to be in veterinary school), which would be completely hypocritical. It¹s like don¹t abuse animals unless it can help me."

INGRID NEWKIRK HAS MORE INTELLIGENCE, INTEGRITY, CLASS AND COMPASSION IN HER LITTLE FINGER THAN YOU HAVE IN ONE STRAND OF YOUR WEAVE. SHE HAS GIVEN HER LIFE TO PROVIDING A CHOICE FOR THE CHOICE LESS, A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS. SHE IS THE LEADER OF THE LARGEST ANIMAL RIGHTS ORGANIZATION IN THE WORLD AND HAS DEDICATED MORE THAN TWENTY FIVE YEARS TO CHAMPIONING A CAUSE THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS TO MANY PEOPLE ALL IN THE NAME OF COMPASSION. SHE HAS INSPIRED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE TO CHANGE THE WAY THEY ABUSE ANIMALS IN THEIR EVERY DAY LIFE. SHE IS AS TOUGH AS NAILS AND HAS EVEN BEEN JAILED NUMBEROUS TIMES FOR HER COMMITMENT TO ANIMALS EVERYWHERE. SHE IS A HERO- THE REAL DEAL AND YOU ON THE OTHER HAND HAVE SPENT YOUR TIME HERE ON EARTH DOING ...UM, WHAT EXACTLY?

(4) "I feel very strongly about a lot of things such as the sweatshops that spin cotton and the blood on their hands."

IT'S UNFORTUNATE YOUR HEART CANNOT EXTEND BEYOND HUMANS, BUT HONEY YOU ARE THE ONE WHO HAS BLOOD ON HER HANDS AND ITS DRIPPING FROM YOUR COAT.

(5) "Btw it¹s not just the look of fur. It¹s warm as hell and feels glorious, ever rubbed faux fur on your body? Nothing luxurious about that. Then the letter proceeded to name artist and designers who don¹t wear real fur. Great! More for me! I don¹t judge them, don¹t judge me."

I HAVE NO PROBLEM JUDGING YOU OR ANYONE ELSE WHO IS IN THE BUSINESS OF PROMOTING BLOODSHED. IM SORRY YOU SPEND YOUR TIME GETTING YOUR THRILLS FROM A COAT. MAYBE YOU NEED SOMETHING ELSE TO RUB UP AGAINST RATHER THAN A BUNCH OF DEAD ANIMALS. TRY IT YOU MAY LIKE IT.

(6) "If I started wearing endangered animals like polar bear or orangutan then talk to me. (Which btw for the record I would not I do believe in the preservation of endangered species) But the minks and chinchilla that quite honestly are rodents and if weren¹t in the form of a coat I would demand they be put to death anyway are not an issue to me.The death of high fashion. Ugh."

FUR IS AS ARCHAIC AS YOU CAN GET SO ITS FUR WEARERS THAT ARE GOING TO BECOME THE ENDANGERED SPECIES AND GOOD RIDDENS! THERES A QUOTE THAT YOU SHOULD REFLECT ON ...THE QUESTION IS NOT, "CAN THEY REASON?", NOR "CAN THEY TALK?" BUT RATHER "CAN THEY SUFFER? " WE IN THE ANIMAL RIGHTS MOVEMENT MAKE NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN RODENTS AS YOU CALL THEM OR COMPANION ANIMALS OR ENDANGERED SPECIES OR HUMANS FOR THAT MATTER WHEN IT COMES TO THE RIGHT TO LIVE WITHOUT PAIN. WE ALL HAVE OUR FREAK FLAGS TO WAVE BUT TO PROUDLY STAND BEHIND ONE THAT PROUDLY PROCLAIMS HOW DE-SENSITIZED TO SUFFERING OF LIVING BEINGS IS PATHETIC. PAIN IS PAIN, SUFFERING IS SUFFERING AND IN THAT WE ARE ALL EQUAL. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME LISTEN TO THE SCREAMS THAT COME FROM AN ANIMAL BEING SKINNED ALIVE FOR HER FUR AND SEE FOR YOURSELF. WATCH THE BABY SEALS BEING BLUDGENONED ON CANADIAN ICE AS THEIR HELPLESS MOTHERS WAIL FOR THEIR BABIES UNABLE TO SAVE THEM. ALL IN THE NAME OF SELFISHNESS. ALL IN THE NAME OF SO CALLED FASHION FOR SOUL-LESS PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

(7) "I eat meat, and in fact my mouth salivates as I type the word meat!

"IS YOUR COLD HEART SALIVATING OVER THE MILLIONS OF BABY CHICKS THAT ARE DROPPED, MUTILATED AND GROUND UP ALIVE BEFORE THEY REACH YOUR EGG MCMUFFIN? OR MAYBE YOU CAN ROLL AROUND ON THE FLOOR IN EXSTACY THINKING ABOUT WIRE CAGES, GESTATION CRATES (OH, SORRY THAT'S ANOTHER BIG WORD FOR YOU), WINDOWLESS SHEDS WHERE ANIMALS AREN'T ALLOWED TO RAISE THEIR YOUNG, BUILD NESTS, FEEL THE SUN ON THEIR BACKS OR BREATHE FRESH AIR UNTIL THEY ARE DRAGGED OFF TO SLAUGHTER WHERE THEY ARE ROUTINELY SCALED TO DEATH, HAVE THEIR THROATS SLIT, ETC. STILL SALIVATING? CHECK YOUR RESEARCH, WE, VEGETARIANS ARE 50 PERCENT LESS LIKELY TO DEVELOP HEART DISEASE, AND WE HAVE 40 PERCENT OF THE CANCER RATE OF MEAT EATERS, WHO ARE BY THE WAY NINE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE OBESE THAN VEGANS. PROMOTING EATING MEAT IS VERY UNRESPONSIBLE CONSIDERING MEAT EGGS AND DAIRY ARE ALSO STRONGLY LINKED TO OSTEOPOROSIS, ALZHEIMERS, ASTHMA AND IMPOTENCE..OH AND YEAH, I FORGOT WE LIVE LONGER...ON AVERAGE SIX TO TEN YEARS LONGER THAN PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO ARE ALL UP IN THAT WHOPPER.

(8) And the paint throwing that¹s just ridiculous! What if I was hurling Loubitons and Pierre Hardy¹s at every sad poorly dressed person on the street? As right as I may be it¹s just fanatical and crazy. And people have the right to feel as they please. What about art? Survival of the fittest. Natural selection? No let¹s just let all the rodents run free and over take our cities. Oh wait they have, NY and LA in particular are infested! Why don¹t u save them all from scavenging on the streets and ruining my evening strolls, take them home. Make them pets! Get off my back! Pun intended!

(9) "Underpaid minorities picking your vegetables, now that¹s fine for you right? Please, fight for their rights. How about the poverty in the communities of brown people around the world. She had the nerve to say (and I quote) "get over it" talking of the issue of black people and slavery in this country verses cows being slaughtered. Is she kidding me? Lol yes she must be."

PEOPLE WHO ARE INTELLIGENT AND SENSITIVE ENOUGH CARE ABOUT ALL LIVING BEINGS WHO SUFFER. WE STAND UP FOR ALL WHO STRUGGLE. SORRY YOUR HEART ONLY HAS ROOM FOR YOURSELF AND THE OCCASIONAL MENTION OF MINORITIES PICKING VEGETABLES.

(10) "Actually, she¹s lucky most black people have real issues to worry about in the U.S and don¹t give a crap what her delusional privileged opinions are. But she should try saying that again just for kicks n giggles on the corner of Adam Clayton Powell Blvd in Harlem n see how well people "get over it" lol. If u want to preach do it about something worthwhile don¹t waste my time trying to save the dang chipmunk."

IN THE WORDS OF A REAL WOMAN, " THE ANIMALS OF WORLD EXIST FOR THEIR OWN REASONS. THEY WERE NOT MADE FOR HUMANS ANY MORE THAN BLACK PEOPLE WERE MAD BEFORE WHITE OR WOMEN WERE CREATED FOR MEN. THAT'S ALICE WALKER. I THINK SHE SUMMED THAT UP VERY WELL.

(11) "Find a worthwhile cause like the women being maimed in these Middle Eastern countries. Or female circumcision. Or women¹s rights here in America, we still get paid less for doing the same jobs as men. Quite honestly if you hate the world so much go live in the forest where no one else has to hear you complain about the perfectly good food chain the good Lord created. Everyone has the right to an opinion, and that¹s mine on that! Xoxo"

ANIMAL RIGHTS IS ABOUT EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL...IT EXTENDS TO WOMEN'S RIGHTS, GAY RIGHTS, HUMAN RIGHTS BECAUSE ITS ABOUT OPENING YOUR HEART TO SEEING, FEELING AND RE-ACTING TO SUFFERING. OUR HEARTS ARE HUGE, OUR RESOLVE IS STRONG AND OUR WAR IS ON GOING. WE ARE AT COMPLETE AND TOTAL OPPOSTION TO PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO USE THEIR ENERGY TO SPIT HATE AND VENOM AS A WAY TO EITHER COVER UP YOUR OWN GUILT OR WORSE, GIVE YOU A PLATFORM TO ENCOURAGE MORE PAIN TO THOSE WHO ARE THE MOST INNOCENT. THE BOTTOM IS LINE IS SIMPLE,
YOU ARE EITHER FOR COMPASSION OR AGAINST IT. SORRY YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO BE ON THE ETHICALLY WRONG SIDE.
